We spent two hours with the endocrinologist today and left with no answers. Actually, we left with more questions than we went in there with. 95% of Type I diabetics have 2 different antibodies in their blood that the rest of the population does not. have. Emily's results were negative for these antibodies. Here's sign #1 that we're getting a second opinion - these test results have been in for over 3 weeks and the doctor never bothered to read them. The doctor was shocked to see the results and the lab had done them almost a month ago. I was in tears - the doctor thought it was because I was overly emotional - she had no idea that it was because I was incredibly angry at her for not having looked at the results 3 weeks ago and letting us know then.
So, we are left with no explanation for her glucose levels and other symptoms. Either she's in the 5% of Type I diabetics without the antibodies, or she's Type II (NO risk factors at all for this, though, and she's underweight, not overweight, so the odds are slim to none), or else she has an extremely rare something that's causing this. The doctor is completely baffled and didn't bother to hide it from us. She actually went and got down textbooks to look up some issues - sign #2 that we're getting a second opinion.
And, finally, sign #3 that we are getting a second opinion - we asked about thyroid issues because I have read so much over the past month and saw that often diabetics and high glucose levels are associated with thyroid problems and dh's family has a ton of thyroid problems. So, I asked about Em's thyroid and the doctor replied with "oh, that's a good idea! wonder why I didn't check for thyroid before."
There are no polite words that I can use to describe my anger right now. If there is something else wrong, we have lost 3 weeks. Those lab results have simply been sitting there for 3 weeks and no one bothered to look at them. I will not let this happen again and I am about to become the mother that the doctor's office hates. I will question everything, I will not hide my anger from them again and I will not let up until we have answers.
